agone

Mediterranean shad

Alosa agone is Mediterranean or Thwait shad, fished notably in Lakes Como and Lake Garda, where there are shoals of thousands. It's either eaten fresh (it's especially tasty in the autumn or winter) or as salted and dried as missoltino.

Local names are sardéna and sardèlla.
