boccone

a mouthful or a sea snail

Bocconi, naturally enough, have also come to denote any sort of hors d'oeuvre or tapa. Anything small.

Murexes

Bocconi are also murici, murex, a species of sea snail that once made the 'royal purple' or Tyrian purple dye (red, really) that coloured the cloaks of Roman and Byzantine emperors. They turn up on menus occasionally, but are endangered.
