'Riccio' also means hedgehog in Italian, and it can also be a chestnut husk—but don't worry. In restaurants it will always be the equally spiny sea urchin—ricci di mare. Sicilians especially like them on pasta, when they're in season in winter. In Puglia they prefer them as antipasto, and say they're best in February and March.
