affogato

poached, or 'drowned'

Affogato is a cooking term for something cooked with little or no water, such as cauliflower or small octopuses: the Neapolitan polipetti affogati. Or a poached egg: uovo affogato.

But more commonly these days, it means a dessert of ice cream or pastry 'drowned' in an espresso, often with a shot of Amaretto or other liqueur.
