Pellestrina

Eleven kilometres long, and at no point wider than 150m, Pellestrina stretches between Chioggia and the Lido. It hosts four small fishing villages, San Pietro in Volta, Porto Secco, Sant' Antonio di Pellestrina and Pellestrina. In some places the island is so narrow, especially to the south towards Cà Roman, it seems as if only the great white sea walls, the Murazzi are holding it together—and there is no better place to view them, or explore by bike (rent one on the Lido at Venice Bike Rental or at Lido on Bike).

Like Burano, the fishing villages of Pellestrina have colourful houses and a reputation for making bobbin lace. In the former lace school, the Sede del Murazzo you can see the world's longest piece of lace—450m long, made by many hands as part of a recent art project.

The southernmost end of the island is the isolated Cà Roman Oasis, a corner of Venice few tourists ever see, with wild sand dunes and rare plants and birds.
