Bartolomeo Vivarini
The first Venetian to paint in oils
Bartolomeo (1432–99), brother of Antonio Vivarini and a key figure in the Vivarini workshop, played an influential role in Venetian art through his use of colour and rhythm. He learned how to paint in oils from Antonello da Messina, and produced what is believed to be the first oil painting by a Venetian, the altarpiece of St Augustine in SS Giovanni e Paolo. His later works show the influence of Mantegna.
Other paintings by Bartolomeo are in the Museo Correr, Accademia, San Giovanni in Bragora, Santa Maria Formosa, Sant'Eufemia and Santo Stefano; he also painted several altarpieces in the Frari.
