Fondamenta della Tana

Near the Arsenale's rope factory

Fondamenta della Tana

Fondamenta della Tana faces the high wall of the great rope factory (or Tana), 1,000ft long. The houses along the Fondamenta are a survival of some of the world’s first public housing, built by the state from medieval times on for workers in the Arsenale. Walk down to the Fondamenta’s east end; this used to be a market, as you can see from the ancient stone plaque setting minimum sizes for fish.
