papalines d’Avignon

oregano liqueur-filled chocolates

confiseries de Vaucluse : Papalines d'Avignon et Chardons du Ventoux

Invented by the Syndicat des Maîtres-pâtissiers de Vaucluse in 1960, who wanted to create a truly local sweet, Papalines d’Avignon have become the almost official souvenir of Avignon and its papal palace.

They are made of two layers of chocolate, dark chocolate inside, filled with the local Origan du Comtat. The outer white chocolate layer is coloured red to match the Cardinals’ robes, which naturally forms a thistle-like appearance as it cools.

They resemble Nancy’s chardons lorrains.
