mýdia

μύδια

Mussels. Increasingly popular as more are available from the mussel farms by Préveza, and along the east coast of Chalkidikí to Kavála. But by far the most come from Makýgialos near Thessaloníki, where they hold a big mussel festival every July.

Popular mussel dishes include μυδοπίλαφο (mydopílafo) – a risotto flavoured with bay, dill and lemon zest, or in a spicy tomato sauce: μύδια σαγανάκι (mýdia saganáki), or simply steamed with garlic, parsley or celery: μύδια αχνιστά (mýdia achnistá).
