Mussels. Increasingly popular as more are available from the mussel farms by Preveza, and along the east coast of Chalkidiki to Kavala. But by far the most come from Makryygialos near Thessaloniki, where they hold a big mussel festival every July.

Popular mussel dishes include μυδοπίλαφο (mydopilafo) – a risotto flavoured with bay, dill and lemon zest, or in a spicy tomato sauce: μύδια σαγανάκι (mydia saganaki), or simply steamed with garlic, parsley or celery: μύδια αχνιστά (mydia achnista).
