Mussels. Increasingly popular as more are available from the mussel farms by Préveza, and along the east coast of Chalkidikí to Kavála. But by far the most come from Makýgialos near Thessaloníki, where they hold a big mussel festival every July.

Popular mussel dishes

μύδια αχνιστά (mýdia achnistá) mussels steamed with garlic, parsley or celery.

μυδοπίλαφο (mydopílafo) mussel risotto flavoured with bay, dill and lemon zest.

μύδια σαγανάκι (mýdia saganáki) mussels in a spicy tomato sauce.

γεμιστά μύδια Πέραν (gemistá mýdia Péra), mussel stuffed with rice, a polítiki kouzína recipe.
