Little Gyalí or Yialí (pop. 10) means ‘glass’ and was created by the volcano on the neighbouring Nísyros. The first eruption over 160m of pumice layers, which the company LAVA Mining & Quarrying exploits since 1956. The north side of the island the island is composed of volcanic glass (hence the name of the island), including obsidian and perlite—which provide much of the wealth of little Nísyros.
