Giorgio Morandi

Master of Stillness

Morandi's vases and bottles

What interests me most is expressing what’s in nature, in the visible world, that is. Giorgio Morandi

Winner of the top prize in 1948 in the Biennale, Bologna-born Giorgio Morandi (1890–1964) was an heir of the Metaphysical school, but later became entranced with Cezanne, Enigmatic and austere by nature (he lived his whole life with his three sisters in Bologna), he devoted himself to landscapes and still lifes—nearly always the same vases and bottles, with subtle graduations of tone, inviting a subtle meditation on form and silence.

Works in the Ca’ Pésaro and in the Peggy Guggenheim Collection.
