Guglielmo de’ Grigi
A versatile sculptor and architect
Guglielmo de' Grigi, also known as Guglielmo Bergamasco or Alzano Lombardo (c.1485 – 1550), worked on the Procuratie Vecchie and the Fondaco dei Tedeschi, but first became well known in Venice when he received a commission to make the Verde della Scala altar that once stood in the Santa Maria dei Servi.
His masterpiece is on the isle of the Dead: the elegant hexagonal Cappella Emiliana (begun in 1527) attached to Mauro Codussi's church of San Michele; he also designed its beautiful intarsia marble floor.
He worked throughout the Veneto; his other works in Venice include the Palazzo dei Camerlenghi and the high altar of San Salvador.
