Raffaellino del Garbo

'The Graceful' Painter

Vierge et l'enfant avec saint Joseph et un ange

Raffaello Capponi (1466–1527) was a student and assistant of Filippino Lippi, but earned the nickname del garbo for the elegant grace of his earlier works; his beautiful, wistful Madonnas are certainly reminiscent of his master's. As the years went on though, he was said to have become overwhelmed by the needs of his large family and his work lost most of its former garbo.

Examples of his paintings are in San Francesco in Fiesole, Santissima Annunziata, San Salvi, San Giuseppe, the Galleria dell’Accademia; also an Annunciation in the Badia Fiorentina.
