Zákynthos: Northeast Coast

to the Blue Grotto

Blue Caves, Zakynthos

From Zákynthos Town, the coastal road leads north, past the Kryonéri Fountain, built by the Venetians to water their ships; the red rock overhead featured as a suicide leap in a popular Greek novel, Kókkinos Vráchos by Grigoris Xenopoulos (1867-1951), member of the Academy of Athens, who with Kostis Palamas, Angelos Sikelianos and Nikos Kazantzakis founded the Society of Greek Writers (Εταιρεία Ελλήνων Λογοτεχνών).

View of Tsilivi beach

Beyond lie a series of sandy beaches, backed by orchards and vineyards where holiday development is taking off with abandon: long and narrow Tsiliví, with a beach safe for children; Plános (overlooking Tragáki Beach); little Ámpoula with golden sand; Pachiámmos; Drossiá; Psaroú; Ammoúdi; and Alykanás, where a wonderful long stretch of sand sweeps around the bay west to Alykés, a resort named after the nearby salt pans, with a pretty 15th-century Venetian bridge.
